13 Aug A Documentary About Me Is in Production for the CBC
I was sitting on this news for so long, I thought it would kill me! The TL;DR is a documentary about me titled Fabulous Body of Mine is in production for the CBC. It will be released on GEM Spring 2027. Stick around if you want to know more!
Shortly before Crip Up the Kitchen was published in 2023, I was approached by a documentary filmmaker, Emily Robertson, because she wanted to make a documentary about me and my life accomplishments as an activist and creative. I did some research on her. Then, after making sure she had contacted the right person, because why would anyone want to make a documentary about me, we had a meeting. Instantly, we clicked. I knew I’d be safe giving her and the story editor unfettered access to my life.
Then, the longest wait of my life began as she shopped the documentary.
In December of 2024, I was given the news that it found its home with what I consider to be THE DREAM. That is, only if I would be okay with it. Okay with it?! My brain screamed, OF COURSE I’M OKAY WITH IT! I was slightly more chill in my reply. But only marginally so. Because it’s the fricken CBC!
The timing was perfect in terms of my life story. At that time, my 50th birthday was only 13 months away. To say goodbye to my 40s and to celebrate finally becoming comfortable in my own body, I had plans to compete in a series of bodybuilding competitions*. It was the perfect backdrop for my life story as the reasons to why I’m competing are very much relevant to my work and who I am.
*If you’re curious as to how that’s going, I won my first competition in April and am getting ready for my second competition in September.
Anyway, fast forward to July and the contracts were finally signed and production began. If you think book publishing is slow, it has nothing on film production.
Now, I’m caught up in a whirlwind of filming schedules and cameras following me around and contest preparation and my 50th birthday being seconds away.
Filming will be ongoing into the spring of 2026. And then it’s off to the film festival circuit and limited theatrical release before it’s released on GEM in the Spring of 2027.
The short description of Fabulous Body of Mine reads:
This feature-length documentary follows the fascinating life story of the multi-talented Jules Sherred. Jules is an outspoken advocate for disability and trans rights, a commercial food photographer, a recipe developer and author of the cookbook Crip Up The Kitchen, and most recently an award winning bodybuilder about to celebrate his 50th birthday. Jules shares his trans and disabled perspective along his journey to train and compete in an upcoming bodybuilding competition against his cisgender peers.
